AMplify Humanity Quilt

The Amplify Humanity Quilt is a visually stunning and emotionally resonant tapestry created through a unique collaboration between Pfizer and leading oncology patient advocacy groups.
Designed & created by Joseph Thatcher, an oncology nurse and mixed-media artist, the quilt features portraits of advocates, caregivers, and patients - each block representing a story of resilience and purpose.
As it travels across major oncology events, the quilt serves as a tangible symbol of partnership, amplifying the voices of those who champion breakthroughs in cancer care and reminding us that humanity is at the heart of scientific progress.
Artist's Statement
When I was invited to design a quilt honoring oncology patients and advocates, I felt deeply inspired to partner with Pfizer and various advocacy organizations. My goal was to create a vibrant tribute to human strength and our shared drive to bring hope and light to those facing cancer, regardless of background or beliefs. As both a nurse and someone personally connected to this cause, I have witnessed the journey from diagnosis through recovery or loss, walking alongside patients and families in moments of hope, fear, joy, resilience, and sorrow - all emotions that are equally meaningful.
Throughout this process, each patient and advocate became the heart of my work. Their stories fuel our purpose in research, advocacy, sales, patient support, and medical care. Investing hundreds of hours over several months, I honored each individual, selecting fabrics that reflected their uniqueness and arranging quilt blocks to symbolize the powerful unity that emerges when people come together.
The quilt features motifs like music and dogs that represent healing, elephants for protection and solidarity, keys for empowerment through education, and anchors paying homage to service members and advocacy. Scientific icons are woven in as a nod to the innovations and discoveries that drive treatment and hope. As a proud member of Pfizer, I am committed to advancing science and improving patients' lives through ongoing advocacy and compassion.
This project, like all my art, is meant to honor and remember people. My father, Melvin Thatcher -a scholar & historian dedicated to preserving historical records in Asia and Africa - instilled in me the importance of celebrating every life. His life's work helps countless people trace their ancestry to this day. I dedicate this quilt to his memory; he was proud of this project and followed its progress closely before his passing in September 2025. I love you Dad, you are remembered.
